How to Actually Get Your Wedding Guests to RSVP On Time

Chasing down RSVPs is frustrating, but these strategies will help you get responses without losing your mind.

Make It Extra Simple

People don't RSVP because it feels like work. Offer both a pre-stamped return card and an online option. Pre-fill names on response cards and use checkboxes instead of blank lines. Make sure your website works perfectly on mobile.

Set Smart Deadlines

Set your RSVP deadline three to four weeks before the wedding, but tell your caterer you'll have final numbers one week after that. This buffer gives you time to track down stragglers without panic.

Be Clear and Direct

Skip cutesy wording. Clearly state what you need: attendance, number of guests, meal preferences. Be explicit about plus-ones—write both names if they get a guest, or state "1 seat reserved" if they don't.

Follow Up Fearlessly

Two weeks after your deadline, start texting: "Finalizing numbers with our caterer—will we see you on the 15th?" Most people just forgot. A friendly nudge works.

If someone still hasn't responded after multiple attempts, be direct: "I'm finalizing everything today. I'll mark you as unable to attend unless I hear from you by 5pm."
